Its a joy to meet George. He is full of life and ideas. I had a chance to catch up with him after couple of years in Bangalore. We spoke about all the interesting things he has been working on – the TV show – Nazar ya Nazariya with Naseeruddin Shah, The EYEWAY project for which he is mobilizing various partners around the country, the DAISY project to promote standards in technology and many other things.
And then he told me about this story of the Cricket World Cup for the blind, that he setup and how he convinced Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar and Steve Waugh to support in addition to Rajiv Gandhi, Madhavarao Scindia and others to come out and cheer the teams. India won the world cup in 2014, and here is what George had to say about it.

George lost his sight when he was 10 months old. He has a vision bigger than anyone i know.
He also shared a great story of how he traveled alone to Delhi when he was teenager. His parents, who came to drop him to the train station, were worried about his safety. His mother spotted a few nuns travelling in the same compartment as George and asked them to help him out if needed. His father sensed that it made George uncomfortable to hear this. His father went up to the nuns and told them loudly – “My son is in the same compartment as yours. If you need any help, please don’t hesitate to ask him”. George was elated to hear his father’s confidence in him. And that has shaped his philosophy.

Blindness is not the problem. Its how people react to blindness is the problem

George made the trip alone to Delhi. And he is glad that neither party had to ask for help.
